The ancestors of the Romanians, the Thracians and Dacians lived in this land from thousands of years. Archeological finds speak of prosperous and important civilizations that flourished on this blessed land from the beginning of times. The nature was more than generous - beautiful landscape, plains, mountains and hills; rivers, lakes and the Black Sea; the Danube Delta and a fertile soil. Nevertheless the location of the country at the far East border of Europe produced one of the most tormented histories in the continent. People got used to fight for their freedom but also to being constantly occupied or under the domination of Mongols, Tartars, Turks, Russians, Habsburgs or Germans. Despite this, Romanians kept their good nature, humor and hospitality throughout the hardships of time.
The language is of Latin origin and foreign languages is common place among Romanians, especially in the big cities. Romania is an important part of Europe as territory (238,391 sq. km -12th in Europe) and population (22.3 millions - 7th in Europe). Bucharest ranks among the largest capital cities in Europe (6th after London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome and Paris) with a population of 2,1 millions.By European standards, Bucharest is not an old city, its existence first being referred to by scholars as late as 1459. It become the state capital of Romania in 1862. The architecture is eclectic, a mix of historical, interbellum, communist-era and modern. In the period between the two World Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned it the nickname of "Little Paris". Although many buildings and districts in the historic centre where damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes and dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's programme of "systematization", most survived. The city enjoys a thriving cultural life - theaters, opera, concert halls. Bucharest offers a wide choice of first class restaurants, pubs, night clubs and gambling casinos. The many entertainment venues are dispersed throughout the city's centre.
Romanians love to party, to enjoy the good food and excellent wines, all produced in abundance here. Good humor, hospitality and an open heart and mind, this probably best sums up what Romanians are like.
