Public transport
The public transport network is cheap, extensive and reliable but rather cramed. The ticketing systems for ground and subway transportation is currently being unified, with a new card system being deployed across the network.
Metro
Opened in 1979, Bucharest's metro is improving. Trains run between 05:30 - 23:30 and are supposed to run with a frequency of between 3-12 minutes.
Trams, Buses & Trolleybuses
Tickets must be purchased before climbing aboard, then punched in devices located all over the vehicle (watch how others do it first). Ticket inspectors (controlor) are ubiquitous, and if you are caught without a ticket you'll pay a fine. Look out for the pickpockets.
Cabs
Try to stick with the reputable companies and avoid non-fleet sharks who may and will cheat you. The cab driver is suppused to give you a receipt (chitanta) with the cost of the ride. A tip of about 10 % or more is common.
